A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. There was nothing in this amendment regarding an individual's right to bear arms. This amendment was about the right to a well regulated militia. This is so that should a country like Mexico invaded U.S. soil the citizens have access to a militia that could defend their state until federal forces arrive. People like to focus solely on the second half from "the right of" to "shall not be infringed" without taking notice of the first half which states that this refers to a "well regulated militia". It wasn't until a 2008 Supreme Court hearing, District of Columbia v. Heller, where the decision was made that this amendment also applied to citizens outside of a militia. If these protesters really want to do something in regards to gun control then they should be protesting the Supreme Court to review their decision on this case and evaluate if this amendment really does protect an individual's right to bear arms.
